Get to Know Cienfuegos
Cienfuegos is home to 117 thousand "Cienfuegueros" (locals) and it is also the capital of the province with the same name. The city is also known as "Perla del Sur" (Southern Pearl), and due to its unique history and structures it was declared by UNESCO a World Heritage site in 2005.
Cienfuegos was founded in 1819 by the French Don Luis de Clouet. This drags a lot of French influence to the region. In 1829, king Fernando VII, authorized the city's name change from Villa Fernandina de Jagua to Cienfuegos (in reference to the Capitan General Jose Cienfuegos).
